2001 Chrysler Sebring Camshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Reinstall a Camshaft on 2001 Chrysler Sebring?
A: Before removing the camshaft, remove the cylinder head cover, the camshaft position sensor and the camshaft target magnet. Then, remove the timing belt and afterward, take out the camshaft sprockets and the timing belt rear cover. You should first note where the outer bearing caps are. Use the right order to loosen the fasteners on each camshaft's bearing cap, noting that you need to tell the intake cam from the exhaust cam apart by the width of their thrust bearing faces, where the intake cam #6 is wider. Make sure you know which camshafts you have and then take them out after identification. If rocker arms are being uninstalled, put a mark on them to remind you where each one belonged. Cleans the camshaft with a suitable fluid. Take a close look at the camshaft bearing journals, searching for any harm or tight spots and look over the cylinder head for any damage as well. Check the cam lobe and its bearings for any irregularities or damage and replace the whole camshaft if found to be defective. According to the standard, the wear on the lobe should be 0.0254 mm and it should not exceed 0.254 mm; replace the camshaft if this limit is reached. Nobody on installation. Apply adequate oil to the surface of the camshaft bearings, rocker arms and camshaft lobes and when using reused rocker arms, put them back in place readjusting them if necessary. Set the camshafts on the cylinder head bearing journals and insert the right and left camshaft bearing caps No. 2 - 5 and right No. 6. Tighten the M8 fasteners to 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.) in the right sequence. Use Mopar Gasket Maker on bearing caps Nos. 1 and 6 and then install them with the M8 screws tightened to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.). The seals must come after bearing end caps. Next, install the camshaft target magnet and sensor and after that, the camshaft oil seals. After that, install the cylinder head cover, timing belt rear cover and camshaft sprocket and then set the timing belt into place.
