2001 Dodge Durango Brake Caliper Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Brake Caliper on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: The first thing to do when servicing the brake caliper is to drain the cellular fluid into a drain pan. Slide the screwdriver into the base of the piston dust boot to push it out of the groove. Cover the set screw side of the caliper, using around 1 inch of shop towels to keep the piston from being harmed. Apply a quick burst of compressed air down the fluid inlet to remove the caliper piston, never hold the piston and make sure not to keep air pressure on for too long, as it could damage the piston. Use a wood pencil or plastic remove the caliper piston seal, be careful not to scratch the bore with a metal one, then pull out the caliper slide pin bushings and their boots and then unscrew and remove the caliper bleed screw and cap. For assembly, put GE or Dow silicone grease on both the boots and bushings of the slide pin and then insert them onto the caliper. Wet the surface of the caliper bore, piston and new piston seal with brake fluid, then insert the seal into the groove and give it another lubrication with brake fluid. On the edge and slit of the piston and dust seal, put GE 661, Dow 111 or a similar silicone grease in a thin layer to guard against corrosion. Slide the boot boot over the piston and put the boot lip into the piston's groove, then push forward on the retainer section until the folds lock into position. Ring in the bore first by rotating the caliper piston and only pressing it halfway to avoid a shaft cock and then firmly plunge the piston to the bottom. After everything else is complete, use Installer 8248 and Handle C-4171 to place the piston dust boot, then reinstall the caliper bleed screw and bleed screw cap should you have removed them.
