2001 Dodge Durango Crankshaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Crankshaft with the Engine Still Installed on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: Take off the transmission, then detach the oil pan and the oil pump from the rear main bearing cap to remove the crankshaft when the engine is in the car. After that, take out the vibration damper and timing chain cover. Note that the rod bearing caps with bearings must be removed first and the crankshaft should be supported, so the main bearing caps come off safely. Attach a jack to help hold the crankshaft in place, identify the main bearing caps and unscrew them all before lowering the crankshaft out of the engine's block. You should take out the rear and front crankshaft oil seals. Before letting any Mopar Gasket Maker touch the surfaces, clean off any gasket maker residue or sealant left on the block and rear cap. Add a little oil to the new upper seal lips and put the rear oil seal bearing in place, white paint on the rear. Move the crankshaft into the cylinder block, dampen the new lower seal lips lightly with oil and fit the new lower rear bearing oil seal into the cap with the white paint side facing the rear end. With the rear main bearing cap, coat both edges with 5 mm of Mopar Gasket Maker and immediately assemble it using the cap slot, the dowel and the four bolts to get it aligned. Clean every cap bolt and add a fresh coat of oil, fit all main bearing caps and apply 115 Nm of torque when tightening the new bolts. Attach the oil pump, timing chain cover and vibration damper all over again. Put the connecting rods on the crankshaft, set the caps on top of the rods and tighten them with a 61 Nm wrench. Put Mopar Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant on the bearing cap over the bearing joint and apply a slight bit, wiping away any extra that comes out of the seal groove on the oil pan. At the end, add the new front crankshaft oil seal and the oil pan, Unless the transmission has been removed, do not install it at this time.
