2001 Dodge Durango Alternator Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair an Alternator on 2001 Dodge Durango?
A: Before beginning, disconnect the negative battery cable to make sure you avoid damaging the electrical system. Get rid of the generator drive belt and carefully unsnap the plastic cable protector cover from the B+ mounting stud. After that, loosen the generator pivot and its mounting bolts or nuts to swing the generator out of the way to the wire connectors. Take out the B+ terminal mounting nut found at the generator rear and cut the wire free from that terminal. Push on the tab from the back of the field wire connector, disconnect it, then remove the generator from the vehicle. Set the generator at the rear of the engine and snap the cable of the field wire into the back of the device. Fix the B+ terminal to the generator mounting stud and tighten the nut to a torque of 12 Nm (108 in. lbs.) with your tools. Fix the mounting fasteners, then tighten the generator mounting bolt and pivot bolt/nut to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.) torque. Don't use a screwdriver to ease the belt inside the pulley rim and make sure the pulley causing the water pump to spin is set correctly, to stop the pump from turning backward and overheating the engine. Next, install the generator drive belt, fit the cable protector cover to the B+ mounting stud and secure the negative battery cable back toailed.
