2001 Dodge Grand Caravan Oil Pan Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Effectively Maintain and Repair an Oil Pan on 2001 Dodge Grand Caravan?
A: Before servicing the oil pan, dislodge the battery negative cable from the battery and take out the engine oil dipstick. First, raise the car on a hoist and remove the engine oil and later remove the drive belt splash shield. After that, take out the strut to transaxle connecting bolt and loosen the bolts that tie the strut to the engine block. Pull off the cover for the transaxle case, unscrew the fasteners on the oil pan and then take out the oil pan with its gasket. With a solvent, clean both the oil pan and the dry block surface and then wipe them off with a dry cloth to remove any gasket materials. Hold the oil screen and pick-up tube over clean solvent and clean them with cotton. Examine the threading on the oil drain plug and its hole to make sure it is not damaged, fix it if necessary and set a new drain plug gasket. Tighten everything to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Be sure to check the oil pan mounting flange for irregularities or bending and straighten the flange if it is bent and also check the condition of the oil screen and pick-up tube. Clean the areas you will seal and spread a 1/8 inch layer of Mopar Engine RTV GEN II along the parting line between the chain case cover and the rear seal retainer for installation. Place a new pan gasket on the oil pan, lower the pan onto the engine and tighten all fasteners so the torque reads 12 Nm (105 in. lbs.). Retrieve the cover to the transaxle case, then the strut bolt to the transaxle housing, tightening all the bending brace bolts along the way. Remove the splash shield under the drive belt and then lower the vehicle. After that, reattach the oil dipstick. Next, connect the negative terminal to the battery and add oil to the right level in the crankcase.
