2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Ball Joint Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair the upper ball joint on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: Raise the back part of the car by setting a jack under the outer lower suspension arm and then take the wheel and tire off before you remove and service the upper ball joint. After that, pull out the disc brake caliper and the wheel speed sensor and props up the lower control arm. After you take out the cotter pins and nuts from the ball joints, fit the Ball Joint Remover C-3564-A between the ball joints and turn the tool's threaded part to apply pressure to the upper ball joint; sometimes you may need to hit the knuckle with a hammer to separate the ball joints from the knuckle. Clip Tool C-3561 around the joint and rotate it as you pull the ball joint out of the suspension arm. To attach the new ball joint, twist Tool C-3561 one rotation to tighten it to 170 Nm (125 ft. lbs.). Make sure the distance between the ball joint and the arm is between 0.25 and 1.25 mm (0.01 and 0.05 inch). Set the new seal over the ball joint and lock it into place, next position the upper ball joint in the steering knuckle and tighten the retaining nut to 183 Nm (135 ft. lbs.). After the new spindle bearings, put in the wheel speed sensor and then the disc brake caliper. After that, put on the wheel and tire assembly, lower the car and make sure the front wheels are aligned.
