2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Van Coil Springs Parts and Q&A
Q: How to service and repair Coil Springs on 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 Van?
A: You should first lift and support the car and afterward, take off the front wheel and tire. After that, disconnect the disc brake caliper from the steering knuckle and get rid of the shock absorber. Remove the tension strut from the suspension arm under the vehicle. By passing Spring Compressor DD-1278 from the lower arm, to the coil spring, to the shock hole and making the bell-shaped end touch the lower arm, you can then install the nut just above the shock hole. Press the nut on the spring compressor until it is finger-tight against the bell shape, then turn it 1/2 turn to stop the spring movement while you separate the suspension arm from the steering knuckle. Pull out the cotter pin, remove the nut under the steering knuckle and then place the Ball Joint Remover C-3564-A over the lower ball joint, twisting the threaded section to secure it on place. Press the lower ball joint away from the upper one and tap the steering knuckle hard to loosen it, without twisting the joint out of place. Loose the control arm pivot bolt if you need the steering arm to swing downward. After removing the compressor, lower the bottom arm of the suspension and pull out the coil spring and its isolator. Once on the coil spring, apply the isolator pad to the top and sit the spring in the lower suspension arm with the flat part on the upper side and the ramped part at the bottom. Fit the lower-arm Spring Compressor DD-1278 over the assembly through the spring and shock hole and tighten the tool nut. Drop the steering knuckle onto the lower ball joint and secure it with the retaining nut, tightening it to 135 ft. lbs. or 175 ft. lbs. for the bolt type you have and then put in new cotter pins. Install the tension strut, take out the spring compressor tool and put on the shock absorber and disc brake caliper. Afterwards, reattach the wheel and tire combination, bring the vehicle to the ground and inspect wheel alignment ahead.
