2001 Dodge Ram 3500 Steering Knuckle Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Steering Knuckle on 2001 Dodge Ram 3500?
A: Before you service or repair the steering knuckle, support the car, unbolt the tire and wheel assembly and raise it to the floor. After that, disconnect the brake caliper and rotor. Disconnect the tie rod end from the knuckle by removing the cotter pin and nut, then using Puller C-3894-A. On both sides, use remover MD-990635 to take apart the upper ball joint from the knuckle and remover C-4150A to do the same with the lower ball joint before removing the knuckle. Fix the knuckle in position on the ball joints and screw on the ball joint nuts, ensuring that the upper ball joint nut gets tightened to 81 Nm (60 ft. lbs.) with a cotter pin. Use 129 Nm (95 ft. lbs.) for LD or 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.) for HD to tighten the lower ball joint nut and then install the cotter pin. Fit the end of the tie rod into the steering knuckle and turn the nut until it reaches 108 Nm (80 ft.-lbs.). Insert the cotter pin, too. After that, put the rotor and caliper back in, fit the wheel and tire assembly and when complete, lower the vehicle without the support.
