2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Seat Belt Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Properly Service and Repair a Rear Seat Belt and Retractor on 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: As soon as a seat belt service is done, go over each seat belt, buckle and all attachment parts to check for correct installation, operation or possible harm. Throw away any belt that's cut and use a belt tightening tool to repair and straighten those that are twisted or loose. Any belt with a malfunctioning buckle or retractor or any belt whose latch plate or anchor plate is bent or damaged, must be replaced. Avoid repairing seat belt components; never substitute them with parts other than the correct, new, unused replacements listed in the Mopar Parts Catalog. To get the rear seat belt and retractor out, lift the plastic latch at the middle rear seat rail and fold the rear seat forward onto the front bucket seat. Unscrew the mount for the seat belt anchor from the floor panel and then pull the anchor plate free. Raise the rear seat and take off the rear shoulder belt turning loop cover on the side closest to you, where you'll find the screw. Unscrew it and remove both the screw and the turning loop. Take off the trim from the quarter inner panel and remove the screw holding the retractor to the rear wheelhouse flange, then lift the retractor locator tab from the C-pillar's slot. The retractor shield must be in place and not damaged in the C-pillar when you put the retractor in the shield, with the locator tab securely engaged in the slot. Tighten the screw attaching the retractor to the mounting tab on the rear wheelhouse flange to 43 Nm (32 ft. lbs.), then attach the trim back to the outer panel on that side. Set the rear shoulder belt turning loop on the height adjuster, install and tighten the screw that fixes it to 37 Nm (27 ft. lbs.) and cover the turning loop with the screw safety cover. Place the lower seat belt anchor plate on the area where the rear floor panel meets the seat, bolt it in and tighten to 43 Nm and finally fold the rear seat cushion backward so the latch locks in completely.
