2001 Jeep Wrangler Fuel Rail Parts and Q&A

  • Q: Why is it crucial to release fuel system pressure before servicing the fuel rail on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: The fuel damper is part of the whole fuel system and remains under fuel pressure when the engine is off, so the fuel pressure must be released before servicing the rail. First, remove the fuel tank filler tube cap and complete the Fuel System Pressure Release Procedure. First, remove the negative battery cable and then remove the air tube from the top of the throttle body, except if you have an engine that needs its air cleaner ducts removed from the throttle body. Disconnect all the injector harness electrical connectors, looking for a number that matches the cylinder the injector is for; if you don't find numbers, identify each connector prior to removing them. Disconnect the clip and the fuel line at the fuel rail, using the steps given for Quick-Connect Fittings. Take off the throttle, speed control (if equipped) and automatic transmission cables from the throttle body, then remove the routing bracket at the intake manifold. Separate the mounting stud from the crankshaft sensor's pigtail harness by removing its nut and clean any trash or grime from each injector on the fuel rail. Take off the mounting nuts or bolts on the fuel rail and move the rail around until all the fuel injectors have exited the intake manifold. Before installing, wipe out the bore at the intake manifold for each injector and rub a little clean engine oil on the O-rings of all injectors. Place each fuel injector's tip into the injector bore inside the intake manifold and carefully seat them. Screw in the fuel rail mounting bolts to 11 ± 3 Nm (100 ± 25 in. lbs.), then place the crankshaft position sensor pigtail wire harness clamp and wire harness on the mounting stud and tighten the nut. Plug the tagged injector harness connectors into their appropriate injectors and join the fuel line and fuel line latch clip to the fuel rail, using the steps for Quick-Connect Fittings. Add a protective cap to the pressure test port fitting if it's available and then secure the cable routing bracket onto the intake manifold. Attach the throttle, speed control and automatic transmission cables to the throttle body and then fit the air tube over the top of the body. In the end, fit the fuel tank cap, attach the negative battery cable, ignite the engine and look for signs of fuel leaks.
