2001 Jeep Wrangler Camshaft Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Camshaft in an Engine on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: Four steel-shelled, babbitt lined bearings are pressed into the cylinder block, have their bores reamed and are spaced by 0.254 mm (0.010 inch) from the front to the rear to allow for simple removal and installation of the camshaft. It is best not to remove or replace camshaft bearings with normal tools, as you should use tool 8544 Camshaft Bushing Remover Installer and carry out the job when the engine and all oil passages are completely disassembled. Before removing the camshaft, unhook the black cable from the battery, pour the coolant into a clean reusable container and remove the radiator or radiator and condenser if you have A/C. Align the mark you make on the distributor housing with the rotor lip and the clamp and continue the mark on the cylinder block. Pay attention to the location of the rotor against the engine, then remove the distributor and wires, the intake hose with the resonator, the cylinder head cover, rocker arms, bridges, pivots, push rods, hydraulic valve tappets, vibration damper and timing case cover. Make sure the 1 bearing is clean outside, aligned correctly with the oil hole and that the location of the journals, lobes and distributor gear is proper for installation. With tool 8544 or a similar one, add the new camshaft bearings, cover the camshaft in Mopar engine oil supplement or equivalent and place the camshaft cautiously to avoid harming the bearings. Turn the bolt that controls the tensioner so that it is loose, pull the tensioner block toward the lever and tighten it. Set up the timing chain and sprockets, let go of the timing chain tensioner, install the timing cover with its replacement oil seal, then the vibration damper, hydraulic valve tappets, push rods, rocker arms, bridges, pivots and engine cylinder head cover. Loop all the items back in underhood, including the distributor and wiring, resonator assembly, air inlet hose and radiator or radiator and condenser for A/C equipped cars, tightening the hose clamps to 4 Nm (35 in. lbs.). After that, fill the cooling system and secure the negative battery cable.
