2002 Chrysler Concorde Piston Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How Are Pistons and Connecting Rods Removed and Installed in an Engine on 2002 Chrysler Concorde?
A: First, insert a reliable ridge reamer onto the ridge of the cylinder bore and leave the tops of the pistons covered to prevent dust from them. Taking out the pistons and connecting rods from the top, make sure the crankshaft is turned so the rod is properly placed in the middle of the each cylinder bore. Scribe the postitions of the connecting rod and bearing caps on the crankshaft using a permanent ink marker or scribe tool. Avoid damaging the parts on the fractured rod and cap joint face surfaces. When the connecting rod cap is removed, slide the Special Tool 8189 Guides into the actual connecting rod and carefully withdraw the piston and rod assembly from the crankshaft end of the cylinder. Put the bearing cap back on the mating rod when taking the bearing off to avoid any damage. During installation, set the piston rings first and make sure there is a stagger in compression ring gaps and the oil ring expanders are flush with the rail gaps. Carefully place the piston and rings in engine oil, insert the ring compressor onto the piston, fasten it with the wrench to keep the rings in their original places. Position the hole on the bearing half with the hole on the connecting rod, coat the inside of the bearing with clean engine oil and mount Special Tools 8189 Connecting Rod Guides into the connecting rod. An arrow and the letter "F" (Front) are placed above the pin boss on each piston and these must face the front of the engine on both cylinder sides, with the connecting rod oil squirt hole pointed toward the block's side where the main thrust is. Rotate the crankshaft to center the connecting rod journal in the cylinder bore, insert the rod and piston, and guide the rod over the crankshaft journal. Press the piston into the cylinder bore, with a hammer handle, as you guide the connecting rod into the connecting rod journal. Apply engine oil to the rod bolts and to the rod bearing, secure the cap and bearing and tighten the bolts with a torque wrench to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.), then tighten each bolts another 1/4 turn.
