Q: How to Remove and Replace a Crankshaft on 2002 Chrysler Sebring?
A: Take off the engine from the car and lift it onto the engine stand to remove the crankshaft. First, empty the engine oil and then remove the oil filter, oil pan and oil pick-up tube. After that, remove the idler pulley bracket for the accessory drive belt, the upper intake manifold and the cylinder head covers. Get rid of the cover for the timing chain, the primary timing chain itself, the sprocket attached to the crankshaft, the oil pump and the retainer for the rear crankshaft oil seal. Remove the the lower half of the air cleaner (also called the structural windage tray), then turn the crankshaft by hand to get the connecting rod cap loose. Mark the location of the connecting rod bearing caps with a scribe, so as not to damage the connecting rods. Slowly remove the caps and bolts from both connecting rod and main bearing areas, as well as the main bearing caps. With care, remove the crankshaft away from the cylinder block to avoid denting the bearing points. When assembling, warm the bottom bearing with oil and don't connect the upper and lower bearing halves for turning. Set up the crankshaft, so that the side of the thrust washer covered in coating and oil sits against its crankshaft thrust surface. Install the front thrust washer by advancing the crankshaft and mount the rear washer by moving the crankshaft to the back, both oiled. Apply engine oil to the lower main bearings, put in the main bearings and caps and be sure to lubricate the main bearing cap bolts before installing them. Fit the main cap bolts until you reach a torque of 20 Nm + 1/4 Turn, measure end play of the crankshaft and go on to install the connecting rods, checking each rod's side clearance. Set the windage tray, rub lubricant on the bolts and secure them to the same tight level as the standard (27 Nm + 1/4 Turn). Apply 28 Nm of torque to the main cap tie bolts, next install the main shaft seals and the rear seal retainer, then continue with the oil pump assembly, crankshaft crankshaft, crankshaft sprocket, timing chain, timing chain block, cylinder head covers, idler pulley bracket, oil pick-up tube with O-ring, oil pan, oil filter and oil dipstick tube. Restore the engine assembly and put just the right amount of oil into the engine crankcase.
