2002 Dodge Dakota Coil Springs Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Coil Springs in the Rear on 2002 Dodge Dakota?
A: Raise the vehicle on a jack or hoist while placing the lift underneath the frame rail crossmember aft of the rear axle to protect the side rail flange. Elevate the vehicle at the frame and then use a hydraulic jack to lighten the axle load. Disconnect the wheel and tire, next remove the axle nuts, U-bolts and the spring plate. After that, take out the nut and bolt from the front spring eye, the nut and bolt securing the spring shackle to the rear bracket and, at last, remove the spring and the spring shackle from the vehicle. Install the spring shackle on the finger to fit loosely, then slide the spring onto the rear axle pad making sure the bolt goes into the axle hole. Attach the front spring eye to the point where the bolt should go in the bracket, install and tighten the eye bolt there, then tighten the spring eye nut as firmly as your fingers will allow. With the spring shackle lined up with the rear frame bolt, put the bolt in and screw in the nut,Processor being sure to press the nut onto the spring shackle eye finger-tight. Attach the spring seat (4x4 only), the U-bolts, spring plate and nuts and finally tighten the U-bolt nuts to 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.). Fit the wheels and tires to the car, take out the support stands under the frame rails and let the springs take the car's weight. No matter what, always tighten the spring eye pivot bolt nut and all shackle nuts to 163 Nm (120 ft. lbs.).
