2002 Dodge Neon Tie Rod End Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Tie Rod End on 2002 Dodge Neon?
A: Before you can service or repair the tie rod end, lift the vehicle and take off the tire and wheel unit. First, loosen the tie rod jam nut and as you turn it, pull the collar away from the outer tie rod end with the inner tie rod, then pull the collar away from the setup. After that, take off the nut joining the outer tie rod end to the steering knuckle by using a wrench to loosen it while holding the tie rod stud in place. Use the Remover, MB991113 Special Tool, to loosen the connection between the outer tie rod and the steering knuckle; after that, take off the heat shield. Take the outer tie rod off the inner one. Put the jam nut on the inner tie rod threads and make sure the collar is flat against it and open towards the end of the outer tie rod. First, put the outer tie rod onto the inner tie rod, then surround the collar over the end of the outer tie rod. Put the jam nut over the collar so it holds in place, without twisting or tightening anything yet. Secure the tie rod heat shield onto the knuckle's steering arm, placing the holes and tangs correctly together. Place the outer tie rod end onto the steering knuckle, insert the attaching nut onto the stud, stop the stud from spinning and tighten the nut. With a crowfoot wrench attached to a torque wrench, tighten the nut until you reach 75 Nm (55 ft. lbs.) Install the tire and wheels again and tighten the wheel nut to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), guide the vehicle down and change the front toe setting.
