2002 Dodge Neon Power Steering Cooler Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Cooler on 2002 Dodge Neon?
A: Before starting any repairs, take out as much fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as you can. Elevate the vehicle and remove the hose clamp joining the return hose to the power steering fluid cooler. Afterward, take the return hose off the cooler. After that, take off the clamp that connects the power steering cooler fluid hose to the steel fitting at the power steering gear outlet port. Take out the two screws that hold the cooler to the front suspension crossmember. Before removing the cooler from a Lhd vehicle, first open the clamp on the right front of the power steering gear housing and release the cooler tube. Slide a hose clamp onto the gear end of the cooler inlet hose, far enough so that it remains over the steel fitting after you attach the hose. Line up the cooler outlet tube with the clamp at the right front of the power steering gear housing on Lhd cars, press it into place and shut the clamp. Attach the hose connected to the cooler onto the steering gear outlet main fitting and secure the hose clamp inside the main fitting, just behind the bead on the power steering cooler fluid hose. Replace the two screws that connect the cooler to the front suspension crossmember, but tighten them to just 10 Nm (90 inch lbs.). Screw the return hose into the outlet tube of the power steering fluid cooler and secure it using the hose clamp, checking that it is behind the small bead on the cooler tube end. Set the vehicle on the ground, perform the Power Steering Pump Initial Operation instruction and inspect at every connection for leaks.
