2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Belt Tensioner Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Install a Belt Tensioner on 3.7L and 4.7L Engines on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: A new belt on 3.7L and 4.7L engines should have an indexing tang on its back and an indexing stop on the housing, both placed no more than 24 mm (0.94 inches) apart when the engine is running for 15 minutes or less. If the pulley turned one revolution isn't produced, look for a wrong length or width on the belt, worn pulleys found on the A/C compressor, power steering pump, water pump, idler pulley or generator, loose pulleys, poorly aligned accessories or a wrong route for the belt. The used belt needs to be replaced if the tensioner indexing arrow has arrived at the lowest tension level, because that is the end of the tensioner's movement. First, take off the accessory drive belt and after that, detach the tensioner assembly from its mount. Because of the high spring force, do not open the automatic tensioner-it is serviced as one assembly apart from the pulley. Later on, take out the pulley bolt and the pulley from the tensioner. When installing, join the pulley and bolt to the tensioner and tighten the bolt to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque. Guide the indexing slot of the back of the tensioner next to the bolt head, secure it with the supplied bolt and fasten the bolt to 41 Nm (30 ft. lbs.). Next, place the accessory drive belt and check that the indexing marks are matched up correctly.
