2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Coolant Temperature Sensor Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Locate and Replace the Coolant Temperature Sensor in 3.7L, 4.7L, and 5.9L Engines on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: For the 3.7L engine, the ECT sensor is found inside the water jacket by the intake manifold just next to the rear generator. This engine lacks a lock-type connector, so it's important to be cautious when breaking the connection, as you should not pull the wiring harness directly. It's important to drain part of the cooling system before taking out the sensor to avoid getting hurt by hot, pressurized liquid. The electrical connection must first be unplugged and then the sensor is carefully removed from the intake manifold. During installation, apply sealant to the sensor threads, fit the sensor and tighten it to 11 Nm (8 ft. lbs.) when working on 3.7L or 4.7L or tighten it to a range of 6 to 8 Nm (55 to 75 inch lbs.) for the 5.9L. With the electrical connector securely in place which can be hooked up in either order, top off any missing engine coolant.
