2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Ignition Coil Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Install and Remove an Ignition Coil on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: A separate ignition coil is fitted to each spark plug and its hole in the cylinder head is adapted to match. Each coil includes a spring at the bottom inside its rubber boot to make mechanical contact. At the point the coil enters the cylinder head, an O-ring provides the seal. You may have to remove the throttle body air intake tube or intake box to reach and take off the coil. With the release lock pushed down, pull the electrical connector away from the coil. Before you remove the coil mounting nut, dust the area at the base of the coil with air from a compressor. The coil should be carefully removed from the cylinder head opening by turning it slightly and then taking it from the car. Take care of any dirt or contaminants within reach of the spark plug top by blowing them out with compressed air and replace the coil O-ring if it looks damaged. Slather some silicone on the O-ring, position the ignition coil into the cylinder head opening and push it all the way onto the spark plug, also guiding the base of the coil over the stud. Mount the coil by making sure the stud nut is tightened correctly and plug in the electrical connector so that it locks into place. In case it is needed, replace the throttle body air tube or box.
