2002 Dodge Ram 1500 Knock Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: What Are the Installation Steps and Precautions for a Knock Sensor on 2002 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Two knock sensors are installed under the intake manifold in the cylinder block and the one on the left is marked LEFT with a larger-headed bolt. For safety, the PCM has to tell left from right so it doesn't accidently mix their sensors. Start by detaching the knock sensor dual pigtail harness at the engine wiring where the valve cover meet, near the rear of the left side valve cover area. Then take off the intake manifold and remove each of the sensor bolts until all are loose; remember that the foam on the bolt threads is used only for securely holding the bolt before assembly and can't be coated with sealer, sealant or thread locker. Remove the sensors from the engine and then clean each hole for the sensors before you install them in the cylinder block. It's important not to install the 8mm sensor mounting bolts too tightly or too loosely, since this can influence the sensor as well as the operation of the spark control. After finishing with the mounting requirements, bring the intake manifold back into your engine and install the knock sensor's wiring harness to the engine harness behind the intake manifold.
