2002 Jeep Wrangler Muffler Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Install and Service a Muffler on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: You should wait until the muffler is cooled down because exhaust systems get very hot, especially near the catalytic converter that can warm up fast. Never bring flames near your fuel lines when you're using a torch. Previous to starting, detach the oxygen sensor connector(s) to avoid damaging both the sensor and the connecting wires. The exhaust tailpipe of an original equipment system is usually welded to the muffler, but in replacements, it can be either welded or clamped instead. At first, lift the vehicle and prop it by the chassis rails, so the axle is hanging. With the hangers gone, loosen and remove the nuts from the muffler to catalytic converter flange, then take out the whole muffler and tailpipe. With the exhaust parts still loose, install the muffler and tailpipe into the car, align the flanges and set the nuts in position. After reinstalling the tailpipe hangers, be sure the muffler and tailpipe are in their proper spots, at least 25 mm (1 inch) apart. Keep the muffler flange nuts at 28.5 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) as you lower the car and start the engine to check for leaks.
