2001 Jeep Wrangler Muffler Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Properly Install and Service a Muffler on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: You must make sure the exhaust system is cooled down before starting to service the muffler, as its nearby catalytic converter can warm up very quickly. When dealing with the exhaust, disconnect the breath sensor connector(s) to keep your wiring safe. In the original system, the tailpipe is welded to the muffler, but on upgraded parts it may be clamped or welded. Support the vehicle by its side rails after lifting it so that the axle is slack. Unhook the tailpipe hangers off the insulators, remove the nuts holding the flange between the muffler and catalytic converter from the insulators and pull the muffler and tailpipe assembly off the vehicle. Set the muffler and tailpipe on the vehicle, join the muffler and the catalytic converter flanges and gently hold the nuts in place. Align the muffler and tailpipe as you attach the hangers, making sure you keep at a safe 25 mm (1 inch) distance between them. Turn the muffler to catalytic converter flange nuts with 28.5 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) of torque, lower the car and then check whether there are leaks after you begin the engine.
