2002 Jeep Wrangler Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Safely and Effectively Service a Catalytic Converter on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: If you plan to service the catalytic converter, first make sure the catalytic converter and the exhaust system have cooled down. Also, watch out when working near the converter, as its temperature goes up fast after you operate the engine. Do not use torches where fuel lines run. Always unplug the oxygen sensor connector(s) before starting your service work to avoid harming them. Cart the car up on jack stands, apply Mopar rust penetrant to the studs and nuts and then allow it to sit for 5 minutes. Get the oxygen sensors out of the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter, separate the exhaust pipe from where it meets the engine exhaust manifold and remove both the catalytic converter and its flange retaining nuts. Push the exhaust pipe forward until the hanger comes off the transmission support and take out both the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter from the vehicle. During installation, put the exhaust pipe and catalytic converter back under the car, put the exhaust pipe hanger into the support of the transmission and join the exhaust pipe to the manifold, without screwing the bolts at this time. Put the muffler flange over the catalytic converter flange and affix the bolts and nuts, without tightening them yet. Make the exhaust system is not closer than 25 mm (1 inch) to any part. After that, tighten the muffler to catalytic converter flange nuts to 28.5 Nm (21 ft. lbs.) and the exhaust pipe to exhaust manifold bolts to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.). When done, set the oxygen sensors into place, finish lowering the car and start it up to see if leaks are present.
