2002 Jeep Wrangler Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear on 2002 Jeep Wrangler?
A: To service your rack and pinion, first place the front wheels straight ahead and the steering wheel in the middle. Cut off and cap the hoses from the pump and remove the column coupler shaft from the rack and pinion. Come next, get rid of the pitman arm from the rack and pinion set and then unwind and remove the rack and pinion bolts to release it from the vehicle. You also need to take the power steering hoses off the rack and pinion. First, join both power steering hoses/tubes to the rack and pinion and tighten them to a maximum torque of 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Erect the rack and pinion on the frame rail and tighten the connecting nuts to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.) for proper installation. Bring the column shaft into line with the rack and pinion, add a new coupler pinch bolt and tighten it to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Set the pitman arm into place and tighten its nut to 251 Nm (185 ft. lbs.), then link up the power steering hoses/tubes with the pump and make sure the power steering system is properly full.
