2001 Jeep Wrangler Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2001 Jeep Wrangler?
A: The first step to work on the rack and pinion is to have all the front wheels facing straight and the steering wheel centered. Following that, disconnect the fluid hoses/tubes from the power steering pump and take out the column coupler shaft from the rack and pinion. With that, release the pitman arm from the rack and pinion and then remove the bolts that secure the rack and pinion to pull it out. Also, take out the hoses/tubes from the rack and pinion. To fit the power steering hoses/tubes, attach them to the rack and pinion and turn the spanner until the tension runs out, at 28 Nm (21 ft. lbs.). Attach the rack and pinion to the frame rail and clamp it using bolts that you tighten to 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.). Put the column coupler shaft over the rack and pinion, push in a brand-new coupler pinch bolt and tighten it to the required amount which is 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Place and secure the pitman arm, tightening the nut to 251 Nm (185 ft. lbs.) and attach the power steering hoses/tubes to the pump before filling the power steering system up to the right level.
