2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser Brake Pad Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair Front Brake Pads on 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser?
A: Before you service or repair front brake pads, raise the vehicle and take off the front tire and wheel assembly. After that, remove the two bolts that hold the brake caliper guide pin to the caliper and pull the caliper away from the disc brake adapter, so it does not press on the brake hose. Open up the brake line and remove the brake shoes from the disc brake caliper adapter. While you are cleaning the disc brake shoes, protect yourself from asbestos by dampening them lightly and wiping single sections with a damp cloth; afterward, discard any residue in a bag that cannot be permeated by fluids, making sure it is clearly labeled before use. Review the brake shoes for difference in wear and too many scratches and verify the distance between the brake rotors and the wear sensors. If you must, measure the brake shoe and its inner lining; replace the front shoes when they reach about 7.95 mm (5/16 inch) and the rear when they reach about 9.0 mm (3/8 inch). If you replace a caliper shoe, always change both shoes on the same caliper and the other side as well. During installation, make sure the shoe with the wear indicator is on the side closest to your car's center and position each brake shoe in the appropriate abutment shim on the disc brake caliper adapter. Completely pull back the caliper piston, then place the caliper over the brake shoes so as not to harm the guide pin boots. Place the caliper guide pin bolt holes right next to the guide pins, attach and tighten the bolts to 35 Nm (26 ft. lbs.). Attach the wheel and tire assembly and tighten the wheel mounting bolts to 135 Nm (100 ft. lbs.), before you lower the vehicle. Press the brake pedal a few times to make the brake shoes touch the rotor, review the brake fluid level and check brake performance by driving on the road.
