2003 Dodge Dakota Air Bag Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Access the Air Bag to Replace the Driver Trim Cover or Service the Horn Switch Unit on 2003 Dodge Dakota?
A: Before replacing the driver air bag trim cover or accessing the horn switch unit, take out the battery negative cable and wait two minutes so the system capacitor can discharge its stored electrical energy. Should the driver air bag be defective or go off, the whole driver air bag assembly, trim and horn switch should be replaced together. Take out the air bag from the steering wheel and lay it face down with the trim cover on a clean, dry work area, so as not to damage the cover if it's being reused. Hand pressing on the inside of the air bag cover should result in seating the air bag housing down into place. Open the air bag receptacle only one side at a time to release all twelve windows from the edge hooks on the air bag housing. Pull out the housing, inflator, cushion and horn switch as a set from where they are in the trim cover receptacle. Gently slide the plastic retain wire off the upper right stud on the back of the inflator in the upper driver's air bag housing. Remove the screw and washer holding the horn switch ground pigtail wire eyelet terminal to the upper left inflator stud, then remove the eyelet terminal. Disconnect one of the tabs by moving the horn switch and tray unit sideways on the strap across the driver's air bag cushion.
