2003 Dodge Durango Harmonic Balancer Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Harmonic Balancer on 2003 Dodge Durango?
A: You should first take off the negative battery cable and the accessory drive belt to service and repair the harmonic balancer and crankshaft pulley. After draining the cooling system, pull out both the radiator upper hose and the upper fan shroud. Using Spanner with Adapter Pins 8346, remove the fan and viscous assembly from the water pump, then pull out the assembly and take off the electrical connector for the fan tucked inside the radiator shroud. After that, loosen and remove the crankshaft damper bolt and pull out the damper with Special Tool 8513 Insert and Special Tool 1026 Three Jaw Puller. Before you install anything, carefully clean the damper bore and crankshaft nose to stop any harm from happening. Position the damper slot over the key in the crankshaft, then set the damper onto the shaft with just a bit of pressure. Install Special Tool 8512-A by placing the hardened washer onto the threaded rod, the hardened bearing on the end of the threaded rod pointing toward the washer and then the nut on the threaded shaft. Thread Mopar Nickle Anti Seize or Loctite No. 771 onto the threaded rod and then use Special Tool 8512-A to put the damper in place on the crankshaft. The crankshaft damper bolt must be tightened to 175 Nm (130 ft. lbs.), the fan must be reinstalled and the upper shroud needs to be attached with fasteners tightened to 11 Nm (95 in. lbs.). Fit the shroud fan body back onto the engine, connect the top radiator hose and slide the accessory drive belt into place. After that, put in the coolant and once again link the negative cable to the battery.
