2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee Parking Brake Cable Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rear Parking Brake Cable on 2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Begin your work on the rear parking brake cable by taking out the center console first and then pulling up the rear seat and its carpet. An assistant should use a small screwdriver to help peel down the lock out spring, while you push up the front cable eyelet with another screwdriver, so that there is enough slack if the lockout spring is pulled. Lift the cable from either cable end attached to the equalizer, use a 13 mm wrench to squeeze the retainers and then pull out the cable. Raise the vehicle, then remove both the wheel and tire assemblies, then the brake calipers, their anchors and the rotors. Unhook the ABS device wiring from the rear brake line and take off the rear spring fasteners holding the brake cable. Remove the cable from the upper suspension arm brackets, insert it in, put a small screwdriver under the cable end and lift it up so it disconnects from the parking brake actuator. To install, go through the caliper anchor, put the cable end into the parking brake actuator and have the other end pass through the body into the equalizer and push into the upper suspension arm brackets. Sink the end of the cable retainer bolts into the rear spring cushions, hook up the ABS sensor harness again and attach the rotors, caliper anchors and brake calipers. Secure the wheel and tire sets in place, lift off the support and then come down with the car. Push the cable ends into the equalizer, disengage the holddown spring by pulling the lever and attach the center console again. After that, tuck away the rear carpet cover and fold the rear seat, then make sure the parking brake is working.
