2003 Jeep Liberty Drive Shaft Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Repair a Drive Shaft on 2003 Jeep Liberty?
A: First, measure the angles of the propeller shaft for the front and rear shafts to service and repair the drive/propeller shaft. Hold up each side of the vehicle at the axles so that the carriage and wheels are not tilted. Making sure the inclinometer is not far from flat, remove all but one of the bearing snap rings if the universal joint has them. Spin the shaft until the bearing cap for the transmission/transfer case output yoke is pointing downwards. Size your pots by measuring from the front to the rear each time. Put the inclinometer at right angles to the spindle on either the cap or pinion flange ring, line up the bubble for center in the glass and record this as the Output Yoke Angle. Spin the propeller shaft 90 degrees, then set the inclinometer on the yoke bearing cap or the shaft tube so it's parallel to the shaft and centered and mark down what the level bubble shows. Reach your transmission operating angle by subtracting the smaller number from the larger. Repeat by turning the propeller shaft 90° and align the bubble in the inclinometer with the pinion yoke bearing cap, making a record of the angle. The Input Operating Angle is obtained by taking away the smaller angle from the bigger one. For U joints, use angles under 1°, check operating angles are less than 3°, keep them below 10° and make sure they have a continuous operating angle of at least 1/2 of one degree.
