2003 Jeep Liberty Fan Clutch Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Effectively Service and Repair a Fan Clutch on 2003 Jeep Liberty?
A: Before anything else, take the negative battery cable off the battery terminal. The thermal viscous fan drive/fan blade assembly is attached to the hub shaft of the water pump. Take off the accessory drive belt and then unlatch the mounting nut on the fan by turning it counterclockwise as observed from the front using the special tools mentioned, as the fan drive assembly screws are right hand. Do not disconnect the fan/viscous fan drive or fan blade assembly from the vehicle underneath it yet. After that, remove both fan shroud bolts and remove the whole fan shroud and resistant fan drive assembly. After you've removed the drive, make sure it stays in a vertical position so the silicone fluid doesn't flow into its bearings. Never remove the water pump pulley-to-water pump bolts-they are likely to be tightened under belt stress. Remove each of the bolts that hold the fan blade assembly to the viscous fan drive. Wash the fan blades using a little soap and water to avoid abrasives. When the fan blade assembly is changed because of worn or damaged parts, examine the water pump and viscous fan drive for any signs of excess vibration. Unscrew the fan blade assembly out of the viscous fan drive and lay the fan on a clear surface with its leading edge near the ground. Should the gap between the sides of the fan be greater than 2.0 mm (0.090 inch) or the rocking motion of those sides exceed 2.0 mm (0.090 inch), change out the fan. Check the fan assembly for signs of cracks, bends in the blades, loose rivets or broken welds and swap it out if it's damaged. To set up the fan, build the fan blade to the viscous fan drive and tighten the bolts holding it to 27 Nm (20 ft. lbs.) torque. Put on the viscous fan and the fan shroud together; lay the viscous fan into the shroud. Fake the fan shroud to the place where the radiator bolts go and secure with 5.5 Nm of torque. Assemble the electric fan and fan drive onto the water pump pulley, tighten the nut with specialized 6958 spanner wrench and 8346 adapters and attach the electric fan power cord. It's important to position the serpentine belt correctly so that the water pump and engine run correctly and do not overheat.
