Before handling the viscous fan drive, disconnect the negative
Battery Cable at the battery terminal. The accessory
Drive Belt must be taken off because the fan assembly is threaded onto the shaft of the
Water Pump hub. To remove the fan blade/viscous fan drive from the water pump, connection with nut 6965 with special tool 6958 spanner wrench, alongside 8346 adapters, while being certain the threads on fan drive are right-hand, as you turn the nut counterclockwise. Try not to remove the assembly from your car or fix your attention on the fan blade fitting at the viscous fan drive just yet. After that, take out the fan shroud to radiator bolts and get rid of the fan shroud and fan blade or viscous fan drive assembly together. Do not leave the viscous fan drive in a horizontal position to stop silicone fluid from tainting the lubricant. Never remove the water pump pulley-to-water pump bolts since the belt is under pressure on the pulley. Take out the four bolts that hold the fan blade assembly to the viscous fan drive. Clean your fan with mild soap and water without using anything abrasive. Watch out for mechanical defects on the fan blades and should a new set be fitted, make sure the water pump and viscous drive are not damaged from too much vibration. Take the fan blade assembly from the viscous fan drive unit and put it down on a flat surface with its base facing up; if the space between different fan blades is over 2.0 mm (0.090 inch) or if you find cracks, bends, loose rivets or broken welds on the fan, replace the fan. To attach the fan, screw the drive to the fan blade and tighten each mounting bolt to a force of 23.7 Nm (210 inch lbs.). Since the viscous fan and fan shroud must form an assembly, lay the viscous fan inside the fan shroud, then bolt the fan shroud to radiator mounting bolts, tightening them to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.). Fasten the fan and fan drive onto the water pump pulley using special tool 6958 and 8346 adapters and at the end, secure the accessory drive belt, making certain it does not interfere with the proper functioning of the water pump and causes engine overheating.
