2003 Jeep Liberty Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service Rack And Pinion Steering Gear on 2003 Jeep Liberty?
A: When maintaining the steering of a car with LHD, first use a siphon to empty the power steering fluid from the container. First, lock the steering wheel so the Clock Spring can't turn and then prop the vehicle up. Access the rack and pinion by taking off the front skid plate and then removing both front tire and wheel assemblies, making sure to mark the adjusting cams for simpler assembly. After that, take off the lower control arms and front axle, remove the nuts from the tie rod ends and pull them out of the knuckles using Puller C-3894-A. Dismantle the intermediate shaft lower coupler bolt, move the coupler off the rack and pinion and remove the bracket and power steering lines from the rack and pinion. Take off the bolts holding the steering assembly to the front cradle and remove the steering equipment. For installation, exchange the tie rod ends with new ones, if given, and reinstall the rack and pinion into the vehicle, securing it with the bolts to the front cradle and tightening them by hand until they reach 162 Nm (120 ft. lbs.). Link the power steering lines and the pressure hose bracket back in place, put on the coupler bolt and insert the coupler onto the rack and pinion. Put the tie rod end onto the knuckle and then tighten the nuts. After that, put back the axle and lower control arm. Install the wheel and tire back onto the shaft, put on the skid plate and bring down the vehicle. Flip open the steering wheel lock, place power steering fluid in the reservoir and set the toe again when the steering wheel is centered.
