2004 Jeep Liberty Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service a Rack and Pinion Steering Gear with RHD on 2004 Jeep Liberty?
A: When working on a right-hand drive vehicle, the first job in servicing the rack and pinion is to drain the power steering fluid from the reservoir. First, lock the steering wheel so that the Clock Spring won't rotate. After that, raise and hold up the vehicle. Go under the front of the car, lift the skid plate, remove the front tire, mark and remove the jam nuts, so you'll be able to replace everything easily later. Pull the tie rod ends away from the knuckles with Puller C-3894-A after removing the nuts that hold them together. Then, unscrew the lower intermediate shaft coupler bolt and slide out the coupler from the rack and pinion, after which you'll need to remove both the bracket on the hose and the lines from the rack and pinion. Loosen and remove the bolts from the rack and pinion to the front cradle and then remove the rack and pinion from the vehicle. If you need to, put the outer tie rod ends on the rack and pinion, then install the rack and pinion and hold it with the mounting bolts, tighten them to 162 Nm (120 ft. lbs.). Reconnect the power steering lines and pressure hose bracket after that, then adjust the lower coupler bolt and push the coupler onto the rack and pinion. Screw on the tie rod end to the knuckle and tighten it with the nut, then place the tire and wheel assembly and skid plate back. Set the vehicle on low lift, unlock the steering wheel, add fluid to the power steering and set the toe while the steering wheel is in center position.
