2002 Jeep Liberty Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2002 Jeep Liberty?
A: Prior to servicing the rack and pinion, take out the power steering fluid, ensuring the steering wheel is locked to prevent the Clock Spring from movement. Raise the car and lift the front end to reach the rack and pinion, then take the skid plate out so that you can access it. Remove the tire and wheel and label the alignment cams and tie rod end nuts on the rack and pinion so you can put them on easily. Take off the tie rod end nuts and use Puller C-3894-A to break the tie rod ends free from the knuckles. Now, take off the coupler fittings, disconnect the power steering pressure hose bracket and slide the pressure lines from the area around the rack and pinion while it's in place. Loosen the bolts that attach the steering assembly to the front cradle and take out the rack and pinion. If the new rack and pinion uses different end attachments, move the old tie rod ends to the new rack and pinion and put the rack and pinion back where it was. Attach all the equipment to the front cradle using mounting bolts, turning the bolts until they are tightened to 162 Nm (120 ft. lbs.). Once the power steering lines and pressure hose bracket have been set back in place, continue. Install the lower coupler bolt, slide the coupler onto the rack and pinion and finally put the tie rod end onto the knuckle and tighten the nuts. Attach the tire and wheel back to the vehicle, add the skid plate and then lower the truck. Turn the steering wheel lock, top up the power steering fluid and set the toe while you're in the center position.
