2003 Jeep Wrangler Camshaft Position Sensor Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Remove and Install a Camshaft Position Sensor on a 2.4L 4-Cylinder Engine on 2003 Jeep Wrangler?
A: CMP for the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine sits on the right-side of the cylinder head and is easy to adjust. Initially, pull out the electrical connector, then take off the two mounting bolts and draw the sensor backward from the engine. To put it in, begin by taking off the plastic cover above the upper timing belt, removing three bolts and making sure the electrical connector to the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) sensor is removed as well. Rotate the engine until the camshaft timing gear and target wheel are in alignment with the sensor face, making certain the sensor face is at the back of the target wheel to keep it safe. Place the sensor next to the cylinder head and add the two bolts until each is loosely tightened. Give the rear of the target wheel and the sensor face an air gap of .030" by using either an L-shaped wire-style spark plug gapping gauge or some .030" brass shim stock. Move the sensor slightly so it touches the gapping gauge and secure it using bolts and the right specified torque. After finishing the tightening, once more verify the air gap and manually change it to the recommended clearance before you retorquing the bolts. After that, reinstall the upper timing belt cover with all three bolts and link the two electrical cables to both the ECT and CMP sensors.
