2005 Dodge Dakota Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Power Steering Pump on 2005 Dodge Dakota?
A: Shut off the engine and check the fluid in the system before servicing or fixing the pump to avoid getting hurt by moving parts. Only add Mopar(R) Atf+4 to the power steering system because other fluids could hurt the pump and the system; don't fill it any higher than specified in the manual. Make sure the filler cap is clean and remind yourself the fluid should be at level Cold as it comes out. Adjust the power steering wheel all the way to the left, top up the pump fluid and let it rest undisturbed for at least two minutes. With the car's front wheels off the ground, lock the steering wheel to each side and turn it 20 times if your vehicle doesn't have a long or an oil-cooled line. Start your car and allow the system to idle, checking the fluid level. Set the front wheels onto the ground and let the engine idle for two minutes, then turn the steering wheel right and left to test both the assist and the quiet running of the pump. Should the fluid be very foamy or milky, stop the procedure, let the vehicle stand for a bit and perform the test again. It is important not to run a vehicle with foamy fluid for too long, to keep the pump safe.
