Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Timing Chain on 2005 Dodge Durango?
A: Begin by removing the negative cable from the battery and draining all the coolant to service and repair the timing chain and sprockets. Eliminate both cylinder head covers, the radiator fan and shift the engine so that the timing mark on the damper matches the TDC mark on the timing chain cover. The "V6" markers should be in the position directly above 12 o'clock. Get rid of the power steering pump and find all the access plugs inside the cylinder heads, oil fill housing, crankshaft damper and timing chain cover, then collapse the main chain tensioner, cover the oil pan opening and pin the tensioner to stop parts from entering it. Remove the secondary chain tensioners and take out the camshaft position sensor and bolts, making sure not to hit the camshaft target wheel when doing so. After taking off the left and right camshaft sprockets, plus the idler sprocket bolt, slide the assembly and crank sprocket forward and then remove the primary and secondary chains, along with the tensioner arms and chain guides and the primary chain tensioner. Look for too much wear on sprockets, on the idler sprocket assembly and on the chain guides and tension arms and for signs of contact on the secondary chain tensioner piston. During installation, press the secondary chain tensioner piston, remove the ratchet pawl, install the primary chain tensioner on the oil pump and tighten the holding bolts to 28 Nm. Mount the chain tensioner arms and guides onto the left and right sides at the stated torque value. Hang the secondary chains on the idler sprocket so that their plated links are aligned and put the primary chain on with the timing marks. It is important to first lubricate both the idler shaft and bushings before attaching all the other chains and sprockets in place. Attach the sprockets, confirm all plated linkages are in place and install the secondary chain tensioners, tightening bolts to 28 Nm. Unplug the locking pins in the tensioners and tighten both left and right camshaft sprocket screws with an amount of 122 Nm, using the right tools. Turn the engine two complete revolutions, reapply grease everywhere the chains touch and check the amount of play in the idler gear. Put on the timing chain cover and crankshaft damper, then place the cylinder head covers while covering the properly threaded plug. After that, place the oil fill housing, fit the access plug in the left cylinder head, connect the power steering pump, add coolant and connect the negative battery terminal.
