2004 Dodge Durango Piston Ring Set Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Check and Install a Piston Ring Set on 2004 Dodge Durango?
A: Before fitting either used or new rings, clean the cylinder bore, put the ring inside with its gap measuring at least 12 mm (0.50 in.) from the bottom of the bore. Move the ring down into the cylinder using a piston to check its squaring and then examine the ring end gap with a feeler gauge (1); replace any ring that does not meet requirements. After cleaning the piston ring grooves, measure the ring side clearance so that, when using the feeler gauge, it slots securely into the gap between the ring land and the ring. Turn the ring around the piston to make sure it rotates smoothly in its slot without catching and be sure the No. 2 ring is fitted so that its mark (Dot) points up near the top of the piston. First, place in the order oil ring expander, upper oil ring side rail (1), lower oil ring side rail, No. 2 intermediate piston ring and No. 1 upper piston ring. Begin with the oil ring expander, slide in the upper side rail with one end between the piston and expander rings, press lightly and follow with the lower side rail. Utilizing a piston ring installer, make sure to put in the No. 2 intermediate ring and the No. 1 upper piston ring. Space the piston ring end gaps so the expander ring is at least 45° from the side rail gaps, not close to where the piston pin is or toward the thrust direction.
