2004 Dodge Neon Power Steering Pump Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Power Steering Pump on 2004 Dodge Neon?
A: The first step is to disconnect the battery cable from the negative post before taking out the pump. Remove the fluid amount you can from the reservoir and then remove the power steering pump drive belt from its pulley. Then, take out the hose clamp that holds the return hose onto the reservoir and pull the hose off the bottom. Loosen and withdraw the nut from inside the tube that held the hose to the pump and then remove the hose. Unscrew the mounting bolt that keeps the support bracket in place on the rear of the pump and afterwards, adjust the two bolts connecting the pump support to the engine block. Turn all three bolts holding the pump to the cast bracket which you can reach via the holes in the pump pulley. You may find that you have to remove the screw connecting the A/C line routing clamp to the radiator upper closure panel. Following that, take out the power steering pump along with its reservoir from the engine. For taking apart the power steering pump pulley, use the disassembly instructions supplied. Set the power steering pump, reservoir and pulley on the engine, then tighten the three bolts on the mounts to 28 Nm or 250 inch lbs. Install just one mounting bolt that supports the rear of the pump and afterwards, screw in the remaining two bolts that secure the support bracket to the engine, tightening them to 54 Nm (40 ft.lbs.). Turn the rear pump bolt just past 250 inch lbs. and screw it until you reach 28 Nm. Position the power steering pump drive belt over the matching pulley and after that, clean both ends and fittings of exposed power steering hoses with a clean towel. Replace the old O-ring on the pressure hose and give it a light coating of clean fluid. Link the pressure hose to the fitting on the bottom side of the pump, push the tube nut on and tighten it with a torque wrench to 34 Nm (25 ft. lbs.). Slide the return hose onto the fitting on the fluid reservoir and ensure the hose clamp is in the proper spot. In case the A/C line routing clamp is not connected, attach it to the radiator's upper closure panel. Afterward, carry out the initial procedure for the power steering pump and look for leakage.
