2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Catalytic Converter Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain and Fix a Catalytic Converter on 2004 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before you begin, lift and support the car, apply heat valve lubricant to all the bolts and nuts and give it 5 minutes to penetrate. Detach the bolts on the crossover pipe and on the catalytic converter, pull out the wires from the oxygen sensor and undo the nuts tightening the catalytic converter to the exhaust pipe flange, but do not take the nut out of the T-Bolt. Take out the T-bolt part of the fastener from the clamp, spread the hose and remove the catalytic converter from your vehicle, throwing away the used clamp. Examine the stainless steel converter for any signs of bulging because of overheating and confirm that any heat shield is not misshapen or loose. You may be able to find internal damage by hitting the catalyst's bottom with a rubber mallet. Insert the new catalytic converter onto the exhaust pipe where it connects and use a torque wrench to screw the nuts in to 28 Nm (250 in. lbs.). Place the muffler over the catalytic converter until the alignment tab matches the alignment slot; once this is accomplished, attach the exhaust clamp at this joint and tighten the clamp nuts to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.). Reattach the oxygen sensor wiring, lower the car and drive it to see if the exhaust leaks and no longer comes into contact with the body panels.
