2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Harmonic Balancer Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Maintain a Harmonic Balancer and Crankshaft Pulley on 2004 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before touching the harmonic balancer or crankshaft pulley, take off the negative cable from the battery and pull out the accessory drive belt. With the radator cap open, drain the cooling system and then detach the upper radator hose and the upper fan shroud. Unscrew the Special Tools 6958 Spanner with Adapter Pins 8346 to pull the fan and viscous assembly free from the water pump, then extract the assembly and unplug the wiring for the fan inside the radiator shroud which should be on the lower right side, where the transmission cooler line also slots in. Next, remove the damper mount bolts with special tools 8513 Insert and 1026 Three Jaw Puller. Make sure to clean the damper bore and the end of the crankshaft before you start installation. Match the damper slot in the crankshaft damper with the key in the crankshaft, then move the damper onto it slightly. Put on Special Tool 8512-A by screwing the nut onto the shaft, placing the roller bearing on the shaft so the bore surface is against the nut and sliding the hardened washer on top. After applying Mopar Nickel AntiSeize or Loctite No. 771 to the threads, stick the damper firmly to the crankshaft with Special Tool 8512-A. First, you should tighten the crankshaft damper bolt to 175 Nm (130 ft. lbs.) Then, assemble the fan blade and snap the upper radiator shroud in place with fasteners held to 11 Nm (95 inch lbs.). Restore the electrical link for the shroud fan, secure the radiator upper hose and once more place the accessory drive belt on the drive pulley. With the cooling system topped up, now attach the negative battery cable.
