2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Oil Pan Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Maintain and Fix an Oil Pan on 2004 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before working on the oil pan, remove and set the engine on an engine stand with special tool number 8534. Do not raise the engine during this step. Slacken the bolts on the left and right engine mounts, but leave all the hardware connected and if your car sports a cover, remove the structural dust shield as well. Make sure to only lift the engine enough to easily access the oil pan, while making sure everything has clearance at the fan shroud, fan cowl and intake manifold. With tool 8534, lift the engine so you don't press or pry on the oil pan or gasket. Take out the bolts on the oil pan and remove the pan from the engine before you undo the oil pump pickup tube. Review the windage tray and gasket and change them if necessary. Wash the oil pan in solvent and dry it with a clean cloth to ensure its gasket surface is spotless and do not use a grinder wheel or scrubby tools. Make sure to sift the oil screen and clean the tube with clean solvent. Check the oil drain plug and plug hole for damaged threads and repair as required, as well as look at the oil pan mounting flange for bends and straighten it where needed. Before installing, take off any dirt or impurities from the oil pan gasket mating surface on the bedplate and oil pan, review the integrated oil pan gasket and put in a new one as needed. Set the gasket/windage tray assembly in place, insert the oil pickup tube, mount the bolts and tighten all nuts to 28 Nm (20 ft. lbs.). Place the oil pan where it should go and then use a torque wrench to tighten its bolts to 15 Nm (11 ft. lbs.), following the proper order. Gently lower the engine onto the mounts using tool 8534, fit the mounting bolts, tighten them to 68 N.m (50 ft.lbs.) and only then take out the special tool 8534.
