2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Harmonic Balancer Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Service and Repair a Harmonic Balancer on 2005 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before servicing or repairing the harmonic balancer or crankshaft pulley, disconnect the negative cable from the battery and take off the accessory drive belt. Before anything else, remove the radiator's top hose and fan shroud by draining the cooling system. Threading 6958 Spanner onto Adapter Pins 8346, loosen the fan unit from the pump and lift it out along with the viscous assembly. Detach the electrical connection from the fan inside the radiator shroud and notice that the transmission cooler tubing snaps into the lower right-hand opening of the shroud. Then, remove the bolt that holds the crankshaft damper and pull off the damper with Special Tools 8513 Insert and 1026 Three Jaw Puller. Before installing the bearing, clean the bore of the damper and the crankshaft nose well to stop damage from occurring. Line up the damper slot with the key in the crankshaft, then put the damper on it so it sits just partly on the shaft. Assembling Special Tool 8512-A involves threading the nut onto the shaft, putting the roller bearing on next with the hard side facing the nut, then sliding the hardened washer over top. Cover the threads of the threaded rod with Mopar Nickel Anti-Seize or an appropriate alternative. After placing the damper bolt, operate Special Tool 8512-A to secure the damper to the crankshaft, then apply 175 Nm (130 ft. lbs.) of torque to the bolt. Attach the blade assembly to the fan, fix the top of the radiator in place with bolts tightened to 11 Nm (95 inch lbs.) and link the cable connector on the shroud fan from underneath the car. Once done, attach the radiator upper hose, the accessory drive belt and restore coolant in the system. Put back the negative battery cable last.
