2004 Dodge Ram 1500 Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Remove and Install a Timing Cover on 2004 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: Before taking off the timing belt/chain cover, you should detach the battery negative cable and release all coolant from the system. After that, take out the electric cooling fan and the fan shroud assembly and finally the fan and fan drive assembly. Unplug the heater hoses from the timing cover and the lower radiator hose at the engine. Remove the accessory drive belt tensioner assembly and once that's out, take off the crankshaft damper. Take out the generator and the A/C compressor from the engine. The anerobic sealer in the 3.7L engine replace the front cover gasket, so Mopar Engine RTV sealant should be used while replacing it. You don't need to remove the water pump before taking off the timing cover. Take out the bolts connecting the timing cover in order to remove it from the engine block. When installing, use rubbing alcohol to clean both the timing chain cover and the block of your engine, but never use oily or abrasive cleaners. Give the O-rings in the water passage a visual check for damage and swap them if they're no good. Mopar suggests putting RTV sealer on the front cover, setting the cover in place and securing the fasteners to 54 Nm (40 ft. lbs.). Replace the crankshaft damper, A/C compressor, generator and accessory drive belt tensioner assembly. Link the upper and lower radiator hoses, the two heater hoses and the electric fan shroud to the viscous fan drive assembly. After a while, fill the cooling system and reattach the negative battery cable.
