2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Timing Cover Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Timing Cover for Timing Chain on 2005 Dodge Ram 1500?
A: First, detach the battery negative cable from the negative terminal and empty the cooling system. After removing the electric cooling fan and fan shroud assembly, take out the fan and fan drive assembly. Release both heater hoses from their attachment points under the timing cover and the engine's lower radiator hose. Subsequently, get rid of the accessory drive belt tensioner assembly (1), crankshaft damper, generator and A/C compressor. The front cover is sealed on this engine using an anerobic sealer and not a traditional gasket which is why Mopar(R) Grey Engine RTV sealant must be used when replacing the front cover. It is fine to work with the water pump still secured while taking out the timing cover. Take away the timing cover by unscrewing the bolts that hold it to the engine block. Soak the timing chain cover and the block surface in rubbing alcohol, not in oil and look at the water passage O-rings carefully, fitting new ones if you notice damage. Cover the front cover (1) in a 3 to 4 mm thick bead (3) of Mopar(R) Grey Engine RTV sealer (3), install it and tighten each fastener in a sequence to 58 Nm (43 ft. lbs.). Install once again the crankshaft damper, A/C compressor, generator and accessory drive belt tensioner assembly. Rejoin the upper and lower radiator hoses, both heater hoses and the electric fan shroud to the viscous fan drive assembly. After that, add coolant to the system and restore the negative battery cable.
