2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Air Bag Sensor Parts and Q&A
Q: Can Air Bag Sensors Be Interchanged Between Front and Side Impact Systems, and What Precautions Are Necessary for Servicing on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Both front and side impact sensors are swappable, as front sensors have a right or left side mounting bracket, while side impact sensors do not use a bracket. A faulty front impact sensor can be changed for a side impact sensor, as long as it remains unharmed. Yet, if either the front impact sensor or the sensor mounting bracket is damaged or if the screws can't be tightened correctly, both items have to be changed. Identity all the components related to the supplemental restraint system, including the front impact sensor, before servicing them. First, unhook the car's battery negative cable to stop the system, wait two minutes for the system's capacitor to discharge and then service the sensors. A front impact sensor is needed to set off the front supplemental restraints and hitting or dropping it may cause damage or change its calibration. Before removing the front impact sensor, take out the battery negative cable and wait there for around two minutes. Following this, from inside the engine compartment, disconnect the right or left dash wire harness connector from the connector on the sensor. Then, removing the two screws that attach the front impact sensor to the right or left side radiator support vertical member, take out the sensor from the bracket. When putting the sensor in place, secure it onto the mounting bracket, tighten the screws to 10 Nm (85 in. lbs.) and reconnect the headlamp and dash wire harness. Wait until the whole supplemental restraint system verification test is done and only then should you connect the battery negative cable after you service the system.
