2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Brake Light Switch Parts and Q&A

  • Q: How to Ensure Proper Functioning of a Brake Light Switch on a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: The first step to fixing or repairing the brake light switch is to remove the steering column cover and lower trim panel. To unlock the switch retainer and let go of the switch, after locking the brakes, push the brake pedal downward to its limit and turn the switch counterclockwise about 30° while pulling it rearward. Remove the switch harness from the circuitry and take out the switch from the vehicle. When putting it in, push the furthest part of the plunger out and then secure the harness wires to the switch. Once you are sitting with your brakes applied, place the tab of the switch into the notch in the switch bracket, push the switch in and rotate about 30° clockwise to secure it. After finishing the brake apply job, relax the brake pedal, then move it gently to the rear; this ensures the plunger is correctly aligned as the pedal presses the plunger into the switch and the ratcheting sound is produced as the brake system adjusts itself. Make sure not to pull harder than 40 lbs on the brake pedal so that the car won't strain the booster.
