2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Rack And Pinion Parts and Q&A
Q: How to Service and Repair a Rack and Pinion Steering System on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: You should begin service and repair of the rack and pinion by turning the front wheels straight and the steering wheel to the center. Disconnect the air cleaner housing, afterwards draining the power steering fluid from the system. Remove the lines connecting to the pressure and return sides of the rack and pinion, then pull the shaft off the rack by taking out the bolt on the column coupler. Lift and hold up the vehicle and after that, get rid of the left front tire and wheel. After using Puller C-4150A to remove the pitman arm from the rack, take the windshield washer reservoir and steering mounting bolts out to take out the rack and pinion from the engine compartment. Place the rack and pinion on the frame rail and hold it in place using bolts; fasten the bolts firmly to 108 Nm (80 ft. lbs.) torque. Join the pitman arm and tighten its bolt to 251 Nm (185 ft. lbs.), after which you can put in the windshield washer reservoir and the wheel and tire assembly. After the vehicle is lowered, bring together the pressure and return hoses with the rack and pinion and fasten them to 20 - 38 Nm (14 - 28 ft. lbs.). Afterward, attach the column coupler shaft, the air cleaner housing and fill the power steering pump.
