Q: How to Safely and Effectively Service a Steering Wheel on 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee?
A: Before working on the interior of steering column, you should deactivate the air bag system to avoid unintentional deploying of the air bag and consequent personal injury. Put the front wheels in front, loosen the negative cable of the battery to disconnect and isolate the same, remove the air bag. Remove the steering wheel nut and take off the wheel using Puller C-3894-A making sure the puller jaws are imbedded in the pockets in the steering wheel armature. Disconnect the cluster bezel to the instrument panel, dislodge the knee blocker cover, and pull the lower steering column shroud mounting screw. By pressing at the sides of the upper shroud and tilting the rear upward unsnap the two pieces of column shrouds and lift out the shrouds. Take the upper fixed shroud mounting screws off and the shroud off. Disconnect the multifunction switch and ignition switch harness then take out the multifunction switch screw beneath the switch and slide the multifunction switch and clock spring off the column assembly. Using the ignition key, turn to the on position, release the key, then pull shifter interlock cable out of the ignition lock cylinder housing. To remove the column, remove the column coupler bolt and pull coupler off the column shaft followed by the removal of the column mounting nuts and the column is to be lowered off the mounting studs to be off the vehicle. Take off the ignition switch, cylinder, and SKIM. To install, first the ignition switch, cylinder, and SKIM should be installed and then column must be lifted into mounting studs and mounting nuts must be installed with a 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.) torque. Insert the coupler on the column shaft, fit the coupler bolt and tighten the coupler bolt to 49 Nm (36 ft. lbs.). Shift the ignition key to the on position then release, and insert the shifter interlock cable into the housing of the ignition lock cylinder then check to make sure that the ignition switch and shifter interlock works. Install the multifunction switch, column, and clock spring as a unit and insert the multifunction switch mounting screw, and connect the multifunction switch and ignition switch harness. Fit upper fixed shroud and mounting screws and fit lower steering column shroud to steering column joining as lower shroud and tighten the mounting screw. Screw in the upper column shroud so that it is aligned with the lower shroud, and lock the two halves together, next screwing in the knee blocker cover followed by the fitting in the cluster bezel into the instrument panel. Insert the steering wheel column index spline into the column spline and insert the steering wheel into column shaft and draw the Clock Spring wire harness assembly through the steering wheel armature spokes. Secure the steering wheel mounting nut to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.), plug the steering wheel wire harness connector to the clock spring connector, fit the air bag and last attach the negative cable to the battery.
